The Shape of Water (2017), Guillermo Del Toro:
There's nothing I can say about this that hasn't been said before, but this is a beautiful, heartfelt, poignant fairytale Del Toro has blessed us with. Sometimes it almost feels like a way for him to express his identity and struggles in his own life. It's a love letter to everything precious and unique, which translates, to me, as a love letter to art and creation. Fantastic performances, writing, effects, pacing, highly original and everything you could want in a film.
The Disaster Artist (2017), James Franco:
Ended up being entertaining but nothing beyond. James Franco delivers a great performance in acting, but not so much in directing. There's no doubt a lot of talent is being shown ON screen but the directing style feels very lackluster. There's no distinctive visual style and the design and atmosphere is just too bland. On top of that, the story is so predictable. To me there's no doubt the source material had way more potential in the hands of a different director. I enjoyed it, and it might be more fun to watch with company, but in terms of my own experience, it let me down. The performances, pacing and pseudo-inspirational aspect still make it entertaining, but it turned out too normal and bland to be something big.
Elle (2016), Paul Verhoeven:
An interesting, unconventional contrast to the time of the Time'sUp movement and sexual assault accusations. Everything but predictable, fantastic character development and performances all around, especially from Isabelle Huppert. Once again she proves herself as an extraordinary actress. It's clear this film wouldn't have worked if it was an American production. A lot of clever black comedy, great pacing and an aura that glues your eyes to the screen. However there are some moments that either don't make sense or feel unfitting or unsatisfying.
